This Sports Section - which will appear every Monday morning - is designed for the more passive sports enthusiast who doesn't really have the time - or interest - staying completely abreast of all that is going on in the wide world of sports, but doesn't want to appear ignorant when standing around the water cooler on Monday mornings. Because we are finding that, the older we get, the less we tend to care about such things. And just as an offensive tackle need only understand that portion of the play that effects his next move, this segment should provide just enough updates to at least help you follow along with the discussion. This information is by no means in-depth, and we find that it is best when used to initiate the conversation: "Hey, what the hell is going on with that Penske team?" Then let the quarterbacks go to work explaining what should have been done - while you plan the rest of the week in your mind.
Here is all you need to know about this past weekend in sports. And you're welcome:
CHEVROLET DETROIT GRAND PRIX: Pato O’Ward won Sunday’s NTT IndyCar Series rac
e on Belle Isle overtaking Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden – who remains winless this year- in the final 3 laps in his Number 5 Dallara-Chevrolet. Marcus Erickson won Saturday – but nobody will be talking about that.
FRENCH OPEN: Nobody will be talking about this either - because no American can pronounce any of the four finalists’ names- but top-seeded Novak Djokovic defeated number 5 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, 6-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in Sunday’s men’s finals match of the French Open, or Roland Garros, as the French call it (it seems they have a different name for everything). It’s the 19th career Grand Slam win for the 32-year-old Serbian. Anastasia Pavlyuchkova defeated Barbora Krejcikova in the Women’s Finals.
